The Governing Board (GB) of Auroville takes away the power of Admission and Termination of Residents from the Residents Assembly of Auroville (RA) and henceforth it will be done by a Committee formed by the GB. Foreign-origin residents of Auroville controlling the admission into Auroville for the past many decades through their Entry Service/Group/Board had brought in hundreds from abroad without any aspiration for the spiritual ideals of Auroville but fixated with the idea of political freedom propagated by misusing Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's words. Many of them were people with extreme environmentalist persuasions for whom the entry gate was opened widely. They planted 1 million trees which doubled into 2 million (in a place that was meant to become a city) and fiercely protested initiatives by the Governing Board to remove any tree to build the city of Auroville.
The GB brought in the new Committee for Admission and Termination by replacing a Regulation issued in 2020 when Dr. Karan Singh was the Chairman of the Board and Shri Srinivasmurty (non-IAS) was the Secretary-in-Charge of the GB. The new Regulation has also rightly dropped a form that everyone becoming a resident was required to sign. The form referred to an essay of the Mother titled A Dream (1954) the first line of which has the phrase "There should be somewhere on earth a place which no nation could claim as its own...". The form described it as a "guiding step" implying that Auroville is to be that place. The Mother had given a separate Charter for Auroville and neither the Charter nor the AV Foundation Act have these words obviously because no organisation can proclaim a separatist aim for territory in India as that goes against the nation's constitution and sovereignty.
Another significant change is dropping of the reference to Integral Yoga for personal growth in the form to be signed by residents as that requires total abstinence which is not possible as families and children have been allowed in Auroville by the Mother. Integral Yoga being a new term was being used by the Auroville propagandists to sell their books and events and they made it a permanent part of their narrative of Auroville's identity which is contrary to the truth. The Mother in her last public message for Auroville wrote that Auroville was meant to realise Sri Aurobindo's Karma Yoga.
The Chairman Shri R. N. Ravi, Members of the Governing Board of Auroville Foundation and the Secretary Jayanti Ravi deserve all gratitude and appreciation for replacing the regulation with a new one which augurs well for Auroville's progress. However, the GB may have contravened a provision of the Auroville Foundation Act wherein Admission and Termination are assigned to the RA. A Bench of the Madras High Court is scheduled to begin hearing a Writ Petition from the RA soon.
