Centre to appoint eight Central Information Commissioners for a full-fledged Commission

 On 14th August 2024, the Department of Personnel & Training (DoP&T), New Delhi invited applications for the posts of eight Central Information Commissioners. 

The Supreme Court had directed the Centre and the States to immediately take steps to fill up vacancies in the Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions vide its order on 28th October 2023.  The Right to Information (RTI) Act requires that 11 Central Information Commissioners including one Chief Central Information Commissioner shall be appointed. Presently there are one Chief Central Information Commissioner and 2 Central Information Commissioners.

The DoP&T order inviting applications for the posts said, “The RTI Act provides that the Information Commissioner shall be a person of eminence in public life with wide knowledge and experience in law, science and technology, social service, management, journalism, mass-media or administration and governance”. 

The last date for submission of applications has been stated as 10th September 2024.
