Systems are human-made and operated by human beings, but they often lack common sense and humaneness. What this advocate (see the news below) says about dowry deaths and dowry harassment must be true.
We see the police, administrative and judicial systems move after a road accident, but they don't seem to do enough to prevent it. Whenever we walk a zebra crossing, we frequently find stony-faced two-wheeler riders and four-wheeler drivers keep coming at us without slowing down a bit. And there are the sadistic ones among them who increase their speed instead. It is as if they own the road and pedestrians are a nuisance to be scared away from their property.
NHAI's zebra crossings reflect their scant respect for pedestrians, as their own medians are obstacles at the crossings. Near my home, there are yellow traffic lights blinking and even roadblocks before the zebra crossings, but they fail to slow down most cars and bikes. Many accidents have occurred around the U turn between the two zebra crossings and there are signages warning that part of the highway as accident prone.
I have never seen when I go out, the policemen who pass by or posted there with their patrolling vehicle do anything about it. Surely, they may act only after somebody is hit but what prevents them from issuing challans for rash driving, which I suppose is an offense, to the drivers not slowing down at the zebra crossing? And this may not be an isolated story but an actuality at many zebra crossings in the state and the country.
